BiographyCharles Dyte was born in London arriving in Australia as a young man seeking his fortune. He settled in Ballarat becoming a well-known auctioneer and chairman of the Ballarat Mining Exchange. He was widely involved in a large range of communal institutions including the fire brigade and the orphan asylum. Mr. Dyte was a witness to the famous riots at the Eureka stockade in 1854 and testified at the subsequent enquiries. In parliament, he was an advocate for the mining industry leading to many vigorous debates with his opponents. He was one of the founders of the Ballarat Hebrew Congregation serving as president on a number of occasions. Charles Dyte died in his home in Ballarat at the age of 75 survived by his widow, Eve, and three children.
