BiographyPeter Erne Baume was born in Sydney and graduated in medicine from Sydney University becoming a gastroenterologist before entering parliament as a NSW Senator for the Liberal party in 1974. He was the Minister in the portfolios of Aboriginal Affairs, Health and Education in the Fraser government until its defeat in 1983. As a shadow minister he crossed the floor in 1987 to support a bill providing equal opportunity for women. He resigned in 1991 citing his disapproval of growing conservatism within the party. After his political career, he became a Professor of Medicine at UNSW and Chancellor of the Australian National University. Dr. Baume is a cousin of Michael Baume.
