BiographyMorris Asher was born in London and arrived in Sydney in 1839 as a steerage passenger. He became a store keeper at a number of country towns in NSW before migrating to New Zealand for some years where he fitted up whaling stations. He returned to NSW in 1846 settling in Albury where he opened a number of businesses. He was elected as the local member by three votes in 1859 and served for only one year until defeated at the next election His final home was in Sydney where he became an auctioneer. He married Rebecca Levey in 1846 and they had 10 children. He died in Sydney at the age of 91 becoming one of the oldest parliamentarians of colonial parliaments

His story is included in Volume 4 of the AJHS Journal 1954-1958 on ‘Jewish personalities in the movement for responsible government in New South Wales’.
