BiographyMark Victor Arbib was born in Sydney in 1971. He was raised by his widowed mother and became a union official while still a student at the University of NSW. He joined the ALP at the age of 21 becoming a key member of the NSW right faction. He was known to be an influential power broker who initially supported Kevin Rudd to become Labor leader in 2006 but then switched allegiance proposing Julia Gillard to replace him as prime minister in 2010. He became Minister for Social Housing and then Minister for Employment in the new Gillard government. He resigned in 2012 to work with the James Packer group and has also taken leadership roles with a number of major sporting organisations. Mr Arbib lives in Sydney.
