BiographyMaurice Alexander was born in London in about 1820 and arrived in Sydney with his parents in 1834. He was a merchant in partnership with Isaac Levey as well as a director of a number of public companies including the Australian Gaslight Company (AGL). While he continued to live in Sydney, he purchased a property near Goulburn and became the local member in 1861 serving continuously until defeated at the election of 1872. As a parliamentarian, he was fiercely independent voting for good government rather than following any political movement. Alexander was very active in Jewish communal affairs especially for the York St. synagogue and was a prominent donor in early Jewish educational causes. He married Isabella Levey in 1857 and died in Sydney at the age of 54.
