Series DescriptionConsignment 1: Personal Papers - This series includes the correspondence and subject files of Leslie Caplan, as collected by Sophie Caplan, as well as a combination of both Sophie and Leslie Caplan's files, specifically invitations to various events/functions, Masada College and North Shore Synagogue. The files show their involvement, participation and contributions with/to their Jewish communal organisations respectively. These papers were part of Sophie Caplan's collection and collected by Sophie Caplan. Please note that the papers donated might not necessarily reflect all of the roles/contributions carried out by Leslie Caplan due to the nature of the collection. But the papers do reflect the active involvement of Leslie in the following: - in the establishment of War Crimes investigation with Prime Minister Hawke - in dialogues with the Catholic and Uniting Churches - led delegation visits of both Chaim Herzog & Pope John Paul II - led delegation of the Founding Commonwealth Jewish Conference in London Some cross references have been made to Series held at AJHS where Leslie Caplan has had a mention, specifically the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies - see Other Related Series below This collection contains papers covering Leslie Caplan's roles and contributions' as the: - founding member of Masada College, 1966 - founding vice President of Masada College, 1967 - 1971 - President of Masada College, 1971 - 1974 - President of North Shore Synagogue, 1974 - 1976 - Education Chairman for the ECAJ, 1976 -1982 - President of the Jewish Board of Deputies (JBoD), 1982 - 1985 - President of Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), 1985 - 1987; 1989 - 1992 - Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Communal Appeal (JCA) - 1983 It was decided to retain material, where Leslie Caplan was not directly within these roles. Often these are the only papers in existence to do with a specific subject and reflects a decision, opinion, event, highlight and matter of the day for example, Human Rights in the Soviet Union as they relate to USSR Jewry etc. This is a major part of keeping archives of the Australian Jewish Community, overall. Leslie Caplan was also awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours in 1984. Consignment 2: This series includes the correspondence and subject files of Leslie Caplan from the Archive of Australian Judaica (AAJ). There is added information with Leslie Caplan's involvement with the North Shore Synagogue due to it being an earlier acquisition. This collection contains papers covering Leslie Caplan's roles and contributions' as relating to: - his Presidency of the North Shore Synagogue, 1974 - 1976 - Education Chairman for the ECAJ, 1976 -1982 - President of the Jewish Board of Deputies (JBoD), 1982 - 1985 - President of Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), 1985 - 1987; 1989 - 1992 - Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Communal Appeal (JCA) - 1983 Includes various Minutes and correspondence within various communities and various general correspondence.to which he was an active member and/or participant reflecting a decision, opinion, event, highlight and matter of the day as they related to the Australian Jewish Community, at large. It was decided to retain material, where Leslie Caplan was not directly within these roles.
